Pre-Field Safety Checklist
Weather Assessment: Check current and forecasted weather conditions for the field area
Team Briefing: Conduct a safety briefing with all team members covering objectives, hazards, and emergency procedures
Communication Check: Verify all communication devices (radio, satellite phone, cell) are functional and fully charged
First Aid Kit: Inspect first aid kit for completeness and expiration dates on medications
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Ensure all team members have appropriate PPE (boots, gloves, hats, rain gear, insect repellent)
Emergency Contacts: Verify emergency contact numbers are current and accessible to all team members
Evacuation Plan: Review and confirm evacuation routes and assembly points
Equipment Inspection: Check all field equipment for damage or malfunction before deployment
During Field Operations
Buddy System: Maintain buddy system at all times; no one works alone in the field
Situational Awareness: Continuously monitor surroundings for hazards (terrain, wildlife, weather changes)
Hydration and Nutrition: Ensure regular water and food intake for all team members
Communication Schedule: Maintain scheduled check-ins with base camp
Fatigue Management: Monitor team members for signs of fatigue and adjust workload accordingly
Incident Reporting: Document any near-misses, injuries, or safety concerns immediately
Post-Field Safety Review
Equipment Return: Account for all equipment and report any damage or loss
Team Debrief: Conduct a debriefing to discuss what went well and what needs improvement
Incident Documentation: Complete incident reports for any safety events
Supply Replenishment: Restock consumed supplies and replace damaged equipment
Data Backup: Ensure all field data is backed up and secured
